Sa Chang

Taegeuk Sa Chang

Trigram or Floor Pattern (Yeon-Mu): Jin

I Ching Interpretation: Thunder

Taegeuk Interpretation: Thunder

Taegeuk Philosophy: Symbolizes Thunder, suggesting courage in the face of danger. This form expresses fear as a virtue. It is the element of fear and trembling that occasionally enters in our lives. It is a passing thunderstorm that nourishes the soul. Fear is therefore defined as courage.

Practical application: Kukkiwon teaches that this Poomsae should be performed with majesty, like a thunderstorm. This is the first Poomsae in the Taegeuk series in which the practitioner transitions from the first line directly to the third line via a continuous sequence of movements, further symbolizing the long reach of a thunderstorm.

This form introduces the students to a number of new techniques. The form begins by introducing the double knife hand block (Sonnal Makki), followed by the middle spear-hand strike (Montong Pyonson Kut Seuo Jireugi), the side kick (Yop Chagi), a simultaneous knife hand high block and a knife hand neck strike (Jebi Poom Mok CHigi). Most notably, this poomsae places an increased emphasis on the advanced technique of “chambering” for the next movement while still performing the previous movement. In this context, the world chamber means to position one’s arms and legs in preparation for an upcoming movement. This form is for the 5th Gup. There are 20 steps. Ki-hap is at the end on the step #20.

Watch the video from Kukkiwon to practice at home and remember to come regularly to the Dojo to train with the Master and perfect your technique.
