Yook Chang

Taegeuk Yook Chang

Trigram or Floor Pattern (Yeon-Mu): Gam

I Ching Interpretation: Water

Taegeuk Interpretation: Water

Taegeuk Philosophy: Symbolizes water. Represents the characteristics of consistency and flow. It is to be recognized as a type of confidence where one is able to meet difficulties in life and overcome them, as long as one retains the qualities of acceptance, flow, and natural integrity.

Practical application: Kukkiwon teaches that this Poomsae should be performed with movements that flows around the opponent to take him down, like water. This form introduces the student to a number of new techniques. The movements begin and conclude with two new techniques: a twist block followed by a round-house kick. These create an almost “circular” method for turning from one line to the next, unlike the hard right-angle turns seen in prior forms. This is an example of the “fluid” nature of the movements in this form. The final movements of the form also include two new techniques: the palm blocks, and the rearward stepping motions. This is also an example of the “fluid” nature of the form, as the practitioner is “flowing” backward to his or her source (the beginning position of the form), like water flowing downhill. The center of the form is as slow (performed to an 8-count), low opening block.

This form is for the 3rd Gup. There are 19 steps. Ki-hap is at the end on the step #12.

Watch the video from Kukkiwon to practice at home and remember to come regularly to the Dojo to train with the Master and perfect your technique.
